Airport Fuelling Installation Upgrade – Cape Town Airport
The airport fuelling installation upgrade project was commissioned by ACSA as part of the supply of additional fuel storage tankage at their Cape Town depot. The existing airport fuelling installation required additional storage capacity to meet the demand of fuel consumption at the airport. The airport fuelling installation project required multi-disciplinary interaction and comprised of civil, , and instrumentation works.
This project includes the construction of two 3200m³ above ground jet fuel storage tanks and supporting infrastructure for the airport fuelling installation as well as the upgrading of the existing infrastructure to support the new installation. Civil works included reinforced concrete ring beams, bund walls, fibre reinforced bund floor paving, drainage systems, pump bases, road crossings, fencing and bulk earthworks. Mechanical infrastructure was upgrade to increase the throughput of the depot and the airport fuelling installation and included an additional two road receipt pumps together with filters and metering, the refurbishment of two existing receipt pumpsets with new meters. Modification of the existing 4 tanks included new 400NB outlets with actuated gate valves, floating suctions, radar gauges and temperature probes and replacing of the suction header of the existing airport fuelling installation. Fire Protection Facilities were extended to include base foam injection, fixed tank cooling facilities and extensions to the fire hydrant line. The upgrading of the electrical systems included new depot lighting, power, controls and switchgear for the new pumpsets, metres, VSD’s, tank gauging, temperature probes, high level alarms and actuated valves as well as the design and installation of the associated functional logic to integrate these systems to allow for the semi-automatic functioning of the airport fuelling installation.
As construction took place at a working depot a large degree of detailed planning was necessary to ensure that there was no disruption to the fuel supply during the project. This was achieved via excellent communication between all the stakeholders and operators, careful planning of downtime, upfront preparation of piping fabrications and limited hot work requirements. The client standards as well as JIG and local standards were incorporated into the design to provide a safe, reliable and ergonomic solution.
The airport fuelling installation upgrade project was successfully completed and commissioned in 2010.
